So what is the truth?

Accredited fitness qualifications will be approved by Ofqual. Ofqual is the regulator / ombudsman for qualifications in England. They monitor the quality of the awarding bodies like Active IQ who monitor the quality of training providers like CMS. Qualifications approved by Ofqual are on the RQFs (Registered Qualification Framework).

When qualifications are created they are given a level and a size.

  • Qualification sizes are either an Award, Certificate or Diploma. Extended Diplomas also exist.
  • An Award is a small qualification of normally one unit. Units are allocated credits and an award is anything under 13 credits.
  • 13 to 36 credits makes a qualification a Certificate
  • a qualification of more than 37 credits is a Diploma.

The size of a qualification (number of units), curriculum and the time it is expected to take to achieve the qualification will dictate whether a qualification is an Award, Certificate or Diploma.

The Level stated in a qualification indicates where on the academic scale of Level 1 to 8 a qualification sits. An award at Level 7 is academically Masters but is relatively small in size and will not take as long to achieve as a Level 7 Diploma.

However a Level 3 Diploma is of a lower academic level and the equivalent to A-Level standard but is a bigger qualification respective of curriculum and expected time to complete.
